Outage safety

  • Downed lines

Stay at least 8 metres away from fallen wires and anything touching them. Call 000, then your network.

  • Generators outside only

Run generators 20+ feet from doors and windows – never in a garage. Carbon monoxide is invisible and deadly.

  • CO alarms

Keep battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms on every floor. If one sounds, get outside and call 000.

  • Food safety

Keep fridge and freezer closed: food stays cold about 4 hours in the fridge and up to 48 hours in a full freezer.

  • Unplug electronics

Unplug appliances to avoid damage from surges when power returns. Leave one light on so you know.

  • Heat & cold

Visit an air-conditioned library or shopping centre in the heat, and ask your local council about cooling or warming centres. Never heat your home with an oven, grill or camp stove.

  • Medical devices

If you rely on powered medical equipment, register with your network as a medical-needs customer and have a backup plan.

  • Dark traffic lights

Treat an intersection with dark signals as an all-way stop.
